Fueled by anunderstanding that a common household object, a glass cup, which is not necessarily found in conservation environments, has an impact, a history, and can be viewed from a heritage perspective, could contribute to a more personal and empathetic understanding of everyone’s role in the conservation of our cultural heritage. The Copo Americano™ is an object that permeates the everyday life and Brazilian semiotic imagination, popularly considered an informal national heritage. This research and mediation project approached the study of this object from a biographical perspective based on the concept of material culture, treating its intersections and trajectory as if it were an active subject, in order to map and connect its history to its heritage legacy. A documentary research was structured to deepen and collect information and data related to the socio-economic context of this object. Finally, to apply this documentary research, the proposal for virtual heritage mediation was developed for a participatory exhibition website focusing on the Copo Americano™. Using different artistic and voluntary contributions combined with the study and content developed throughout the research, in order to communicate the process of attribution of meaning to which the cup was subjected throughout its life
This project was based on the proposal presented in the master's thesis developed within the scope of the History and Heritage course at the University of Porto (UP), in Portugal, which can be downloaded from the university's repository. The thesis has already been submitted for evaluation and approved in November of 2021.
